Lesson on the tens
lesson one starts with the powerful ten strategies. Each row has ten circles. In the example row we have one black circle that’s written down here and how many white circles do we have. We have one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine white circles which is written down here. Altogether we have one, two, three, four, five, six seven, eight, nine, ten circles and that’s written down for the total.
Let’s take a look at row A. here we have two black circles, so let’s write it down. How many white circles do we have? There are one, two, three, four, five, six seven, eight white circles. And how many circles do we have in all, and we know that we have ten circles. So let’s write it down.
Let’s do one more row together. Here is letter B we have three black circles. How many white circles do we have? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, and in all we still have ten circles.
Students should start to see a pattern developing. Here are the number of black circles. The number of white circles and the total. Students will finish the page and see that there are many ways to make a ten.
